Writing is a fundamental part of the curriculum and Wimborne’s aim is to develop children into fluent, creative and ambitious writers.
In EYFS and KS1, children begin to learn how to write through high-quality teaching and learning of handwriting, phonics/spellings and sentence structure.
In KS2, the key writing skills are developed further and children learn more ambitious techniques and styles of writing.
Our writing units are text driven, and they link to our topics, which makes the learning coherent and relevant.
Generally, writing units follow a six week structure, where children immerse themselves into a text, and develop their reading skills; practise key skills and innovate a WAGOLL (What a Good One Looks Like); and then plan, draft, edit and publish their own invented piece of writing (independently).
Children are encouraged to use ambitious language in their work and developing vocabulary, across the curriculum, is a key priority for us at Wimborne.
Writing in the wider curriculum is an important feature at Wimborne, too, and children produce some fantastic writing linked to their topics (including at least one sustained piece per half term).
Writing is celebrated each month through ‘Writer of the Month’ awards and children are driven to achieve this prestigious award.
